The Learnables was founded in 1976 to provide foreign language courses using the Comprehension Approach. According to this method of language learning students learn a foreign language by listening and understanding. Students are not asked to speak until they understand the foreign language. Students listen to recordings by native speakers, see pictures and text of each event, according to a carefully designed linguistics sequence. The Learnables has been tested on high school and college students. Students show markedly successful acquisition using The Learnables. Each level of The Learnables is equivalent to one year of high school and can be completed in one year taking one lesson each week. Four levels of The Learnables is equivalent to one year of college study. Advanced programs in several languages are also available. Homes schoolers can complete each level in a year’s time.
